Updated Bathroom!

When I arrived in Vietnam several weeks ago, I went into my old room and started getting my room set-up. I opened the bathroom cabinet and almost passed out because the thing was crawling with insects. After close inspection, I saw that termites had eaten their way through much of the wood. It didn’t look bad when you looked at the cabinet from a distance.

But upon close inspection-especially if you opened the doors under the sink, the termites were all over the place….crawling on the hinges and munching their way through the wood.

I asked them to replace the thing….but didn’t get much of an answer. Last week I asked again and was told that they were not going to repair it. So, I just cleaned it up as much as possible and stored all of my bathroom stuff away from the bugs and mess. As long as I didn’t open the drawers or doors—I was ok. It was basically, “Out of sight, out of mind”.

Well, today I heard some crashes and bumps outside my door and suddenly someone was banging on the door wanting in. I looked and saw this BEAUTIFUL new bathroom vanity! Wow…..it was magnificent.

Several guys came in and tore out the old cabinet. It was a HUGE MESS and the bugs were crawling all over the place. The old cabinet literally fell apart as they removed it. What really surprised me was the “clean up” they did before installing the new one.

NOTHING….nada. They took out the old one, swept up the junk---leaving the old termite “tunnels” on the walls and floor and stuck in the new cabinet. They reconnected the water pipes and left. The floor was a huge muddy, dirty mess—which I cleaned up. I can’t really understand why they didn’t treat or spray the area to keep them off the new cabinet. But nope, nothing.

Anyway…this is a photo of the new bathroom cabinet! It is really beautiful and a work of art.

The Vietnamese really do a great job on wooden pieces like this. I am soooo happy to finally have a place to store my things….but also wondering how long before this cabinet is chewed up too!
